This is the Beaverton, OR, shack of Bob Culter, N7FKI. (16Dec08, 5:30Z)
This station is shared by Bob's XYL Terry, KA7VAF. It's been a while
since she has been active.
I first met Bob when we worked together in the old Display Device Development
group at Tektronix in the late 1960s. Bob had been an active experimenter
singe high school days and got a ham ticket in the 70s sometime. The
above photo shows Bob's shack in December of 2008.
This is a closer shot of the operating position. An Icom IC-7000
sits on the shelf, along with Bob's main listening receiver, a Sony commercial/military
grade instrument. The blue panel in the foreground is the MOSFET based
"zero power receiver" (a.k.a., crystal set) that Bob described in QST for
January, 2007.
This is a closer view of the receiver, along with a recent addition, a second
high Q ferrite rod resonator. The dual section capacitor that tunes
the right hand inductor is configured in the popular "Tuggle" circuit.
A tunable trap (not shown) can be inserted in the antenna lead. Bob
is hearing some amazing DX with this receiver with no more than a 30 foot
wire as an antenna.
This is Bob's lab. He builds and measures all kinds of things here,
often well beyond the limits of our normal ham gear.
Bob has his QRP/Minimalist moments and this is the latest effort in
that direction. It is a CW transceiver using but one transistor.
This shot shows a 20 meter SSB station that Bob designed and used in Field
Day for 2007.
