This is the Idaho radio shack of Bill Carver, W7AAZ.   (15Jan08)

Bill is known for pioneering work with high performance IF amplifiers and crystal filters.   He is one of the three principals who designed and built the transceiver partially described in EMRFD Chapter 6 as "The Triad."

The rack contains a couple of homebrew antenna tuners, a beam direction indicator, a relay control panel, and even a UHF rig.   The box on the shelf above the transceiver is a control unit for a remote HF power amplifier using an 8877.

This is a view of the inside of Bill's power amplifier.   Notice that all controls are "driven" by stepping motors.

Don't let the commercial transceiver at the top of this page fool you.   The next photo shows Bill's own rig, in a state of evolution.
AAZ-Star
This rig is an outgrowth of the popular PICaStar transceiver originating in the UK.    Bill's version is  a "Software Enhanced Radio"  using DSP that is a vehicle for circuit exploration with the ultimate goal of extreme performance.   Bill tells me that the rig should be on the air soon.   (I can hardly wait to work him from Oregon.)

Here's a shot of Bill's shop.

The rack of gear at the left contains signal generators, synthesizers, power supplies and the like.   A commonly used item in Bill's lab is the N2PK network analyzer, described on the internet.
